Why Is It Necessary To Clean Your AC Coils Frequently?

Updated: Dec 19, 2020

With the amount of time ACs run in a day, it is important to take care of the appliance to make it last longer, and work more efficiently. One of the most common reasons why sometimes ACs do not cool as much as they should is because the coils become dirty.

Why are the coils important for the functioning of ACs?

ACs essentially have two types of coils : evaporator coil, and condenser coil. The evaporator coil is responsible for cooling air. It contains a refrigerant inside the coil. When hot air comes in contact with the coil, the heat energy from the air gets absorbed by the refrigerant, and it gets converted into gas. The cooled air then flows into the room where the AC is fitted in. Thegas then moves to the condenser coil. The pressure increases here, and the gas turns back into a liquid, and then the  cycle continues.

What happens when the coils get dirty?

When dust gets settled around the coil, it gets built up over time, and may act as a barrier between the hot air, and the coil. This prevents the coil from absorbing all of the heat from the air, and the resultant air does not get as cool as it should. In order to prevent this from happening, it is essential to clean dirt from the coils every once in a while. So choosing the best AC coil cleaner becomes mandatory.

Things to consider while selecting the best AC coil cleaner:

It should be alkaline based: Though acid based cleaners still do the job, they have a high chance of damaging the coils as well.

It shouldn’t have any harmful additives: Chlorinated solvents tend to be harmful, and a cleaner containing this should be avoided at all cost.

The cleaner must be easy to apply: A spray bottle of cleaner will be the best option.

It should be VSDA authorised: This ensures that the product is food friendly, and doesn’t cause any harmful effect.
