Electric Wall Heaters: How to Install Them Yourself?

Have you ever wanted to save some money on your heating bills this winter? If so, you’re not alone. The average American spends approximately 53% of their yearly heating bill on electricity. However, there are a number of different ways to cut your energy costs that don’t involve spending a fortune or installing an expensive new furnace in San Diego. One easy way to save is with the installation of electric wall heaters throughout your home. These are relatively inexpensive devices that turn a wall socket into a safe, warm space to sit or read by. There is more than one way to install them though, and if you’re not quite sure what kind of electric heater to get for your home, there are several things you should consider before installing one.

Electric wall heaters have an advantage over space heaters in that they take up less space but offer the same results. The average electric heater will use approximately 10% of the energy that most other heating sources (e.g. furnace, boiler) use. They will also save you money in the long term by consuming less electricity than most other heating sources. Btu's (British Thermal Units) are a measure of energy efficiency and the lower the number, the better. Generally, they are only a couple of dollars per year difference on your utility bill or off of it completely. Electric space heaters also have the advantage of being cheaper to purchase than other types of heaters. They are generally much less than $100, and if you’re handy enough, you can probably install it yourself and get additional savings for your efforts.

One of the most important things to consider when installing an electric wall heater is the type of heater you get. There are several different types out there, so it’s important to find one that suits your needs. If you’re looking for a certain type of heater to go into a specific room, you will need to make sure not only that it is the right type, but that it is also powerful enough for space. Electric wall heaters are rated in kilowatts or kW.

If you have a small house and want to install 2 heaters, but only one can be rated at a certain wattage. In this case, the one heater must be at least 3 times as powerful as the other. If you want to install 3, you need at least 2.5 times as much wattage as the smallest heater. Here are some other things to consider when deciding on the type of electric heater for your house.

Electric Fan Heaters

If you only want to heat a small area of your home or office, an electric fan heater is a good option. These types of heaters have a smaller heating element and have fans fitted over them to distribute the warm air more effectively. This is a good option if you want to get the most out of your electric heater. It will not be as strong as other types of heaters, but it will be cheaper on your utility bill because it uses less electricity.

Floor Heaters

If you have a large area or multiple rooms to heat, an electric floor heater is usually the best choice. This type of heater is designed to cover a large space and can be easily adjusted for the optimal indoor temperature. They are usually made out of metal plates that are separated by channels. These channels are filled with either salt water or a non-toxic, medical grade wax that maintains the temperature and distributes it evenly throughout the room. The salt water option is usually more than sufficient for most homes. The downside however, is that these electric floor heaters can run up to $1,500 or more in some cases.

Electric Panel Heaters

If you want the biggest bang for your buck in terms of heating power and comfort, an electric panel heater is an excellent choice. These types of heaters are also wall mounted, but they are usually more powerful than fan heaters. They are also made out of panels, but rather than having the heating element and fan separate from each other, they have them integrated into the same unit. While this is generally a good option for heating large areas in your home, it does have a few drawbacks. The biggest of these being cost and installation.
